A Transitional Style Home In Napa

by designer Marci Arakaki

The Goal

Create a beautiful space with a clean and classic look.

The Challenge

Design inviting and comfortable rooms for gathering with family and friends, with a particular eye towards frequent visits from the growing grandchildren.

The Success Story

Warm earth tones of cream and brown create continuity and flow in this custom home with beautiful inlaid wood floors. A Stickley couch in a rich brown leather combines with two accent chairs offering a cozy place to gather in the family room. Swivel chairs provide comfort and convenience for conversation or watching TV and the simplicity of the Century cocktail table adds to the clean and classic look. A Nichols and Stone table and chairs is the choice for the dining room. In the living room, a large leather ottoman with intimate seating for two beckons you to sit by the fire while a game table for two invites you to play. The resulting space is a beautiful and welcoming home to enjoy with family and friends.

Client’s Response

We worked with Marci on both our Napa residence and Bodega Beach house. Both times we met and discussed fabrics, colors, styles and comfort of furniture to meet our specific needs. She is such a good listener and our homes turned out even better than we imagined. We think of her often with fondness and appreciation when we are enjoying the beautiful rooms she created just for us.

Traditional Multi Room in San Rafael
When a Home Feels Like a Hug by designer Marci Arakaki The Goal Create an elegant yet family friendly home for frequent visits from the couple’s children and grandchildren. Add pieces to design a warm and inviting updated look while providing ample seating for entertaining. The Challenge Marry the new pieces with the existing furniture to achieve a cohesive whole. Create continuity from room to room through color, texture and design. The Success Story The large beautiful landscape painting creates a dramatic visual impact when entering the living room. Miles Talbot slip covered sofas and chair in elegant white are a clean and simple balance to the dramatic painting and the ornate wood hutch. Two chairs added to the game table near the fireplace make a cozy place to play. The selection of a 100% wool hand-knotted rug ties the black and white design together while bringing in touches of warm earth tones. The addition of a torchiere, lamps, and a mirror complete the inviting look. A sophisticated striped silk fabric choice for the Stickley dining room chairs pairs playfully with the color and design of the traditional Persian rug. For the family room, a Stickley Santa Fe sofa and swivel chair create a comfortable gathering space for relaxing, visiting with family and friends, or watching TV on the custom Stuart David entertainment center. Desiring an open feeling in the Master Bedroom the choice of a Stickley La Rochelle platform bed fit the bill. An area rug with a subtle pattern inspired by Nature and contemporary lamps add to the serenity and airiness of the space. The functional home office looks beautiful while creating a continuity between rooms with the use of the black and white color scheme. Living Room Makeover
A Clean Slate by designer Marci Arakaki The Goal This is the second room I have designed for these clients. The first was their family room. Now I was being asked to design their living room. Most jobs I work on have existing furnishings to be incorporated into the design. Not with this one, this living room was completed empty. I was given complete freedom to design what I was told to be a “warm, inviting and comfortable space”. This one was truly a joy to work on. The Challenge When you walk in to this home you step directly into the living room, there is no entry way. My clients always felt it was an awkward entrance. My challenge was to create the illusion of an entry way by way of furniture placement. I also wanted to create a cohesive flow into the adjacent kitchen and family room. The Success Story I chose The Essex Sofa by Stickley as my foundation upholstery piece. Directly behind the sofa I placed an 8” wide and 70” long console by Charleston Forge made with burnished iron and maple wood and inset with facet glass for a sophisticated accent. I backed these up to the front door so they could work together to create the illusion of a hallway leading to the kitchen and family room. A couple of Flexsteel swivel gliders were needed to add additional seating near the fireplace. A glass top cocktail table in the center of the room was the perfect choice to keep things light and airy. A Feizy rug in golden brown was just what the room needed to warm it up and ground everything at the same time. When I spoke with my clients a few weeks after the arrival of their new furniture they told me they are now using the room on a daily basis and they love it. • Sebastopol Classic
Sebastopol Classic by designer Marci Arakaki The Summary My clients hoped to achieve a cohesive and inviting floorplan that would be comfortable and beautiful too! The only pre-existing items that would remain in the room were a rug with bright blues and reds and an abstract painting with mostly neutral tones placed over a slate fireplace. These items along with a tightly defined space were taken into consideration when selecting the upholstery seating pieces. I chose the Westside sofa in a beautiful warm red tone with two geometric patterned pillows which complimented the painting. Two club chairs by Stickley in a light linen fabric were perfect for balancing the room. Stuart David provided the oval cocktail table for the center of the room. The clients now love spending time in their new updated space. Mission Style Living Room in Fountain Grove
A Mission Room With A View by designer Marci Arakaki The Goal A rich, luscious, masculine home which exudes warmth, comfort and artistic flare. Use of vibrant colors and lots of seating for entertaining was an important to my clients. The Challenge First and foremost, preserve the view from this luxury condo at The Fountain Grove Lodge. I also needed to provide seating for at least 5 in a fairly compact yet well designed space. Other than an existing dining set and several contemporary pieces of wall art I would be starting with a blank canvas. The Success Story Upon visiting our showroom, my clients immediately gravitated towards everything Stickley. They chose a stunning hunter green velvet sofa with a wood and upholstered cocktail ottoman to match the sofa pillows. A couple of mid toned brown leather swivel chairs with ottomans were added to complete the room’s seating arrangement. A Stickley rug called Paradise would ground the room with its rich buttery colors and mission style design. A Dale Tiffany lamp and several clean lined accent pieces would finish the room to my clients ultimate delight. Family Room Gets Style Update
Style Update, Round Two by designer Marci Arakaki The Goal It was ten years ago when I first met this client. Back then she wanted her entire family room made over. Fast forward 10 years and she would now like to replace all the upholstery for a fresh clean updated look. Leather, I was told, should definitely be part of my plan. The Challenge The placement of the upholstery was not going to change, no need fixing something that isn’t broken they say. A large red hand knotted rug was a strong color and pattern influence in the room and would need to be taken into consideration when picking new fabrics. The Success Story Stickley’s Boulder Sofa is one of my favorites and I felt it would be perfect for this room. The Boulder is a tight-back leather/fabric combination sofa. I chose a beautiful golden brown fabric with lots of movement to it which I thought would work well against the deep brown sugar colored leather I had chosen. My customer loved the juxtaposition of the durable solid leather up against the intricate flowing pattern of the fabric. Two swivel chairs by Stickley in the same leather were chosen for the sofa and we had a winning combination. Share This Project On Client's Response I have been going to Pedersen’s for quite awhile. Marcie has worked with me in furnishing my home. She is my go-to for all my needs. I have always been thrilled with her choices.~ Margaret View Projects by Marci Arakaki
